Liskeard Netball Club – Cornwall

Tigers do the double over Lastonet 2

Liskeard Tigers 34 - 26 Lastonet 2

Following their close home defeat to Bodmin 1, Liskeard Tigers had renewed enthusiasm when they welcomed Lastonet 2 to Lux Park.

Tiger’s main downfall this season has been starting too slowly but they came out strong and dominated the first quarter. With the change of Julia Eldridge to Centre and Jo Glossop returning to WA Liskeard settled quickly and excellent shooting by GS Kirstie Chappell saw just 2 misses for the period, Tigers winning the quarter 11 goals to 4.

Lastonet came back at Liskeard during the 2nd quarter. Defensively they began to control the circle, limiting the movement and tipping interceptions at every opportunity. However, Tigers GD Holly Lemon was doing the same, giving the team the chance to work the ball down to the shooters who managed to maintain their composure to convert the goals. Lastonet took the quarter by just one goal, leaving the score 20-14 to Tigers at half time.

Liskeard stepped up their defence in the third quarter. GK Lucy Smale and Lemon restricted the shooters; the GS converted just two goals and with the GA giving away numerous free passes by causing contact Liskeard were able to gain the advantage once again. Great interceptions by WD Laura Shepherd in the mid court, fed swiftly through Eldridge and Glossop into the shooting circle, meant that GA Sophie Hocking and Chappell kept Liskeard’s lead.

Lastonet maintained a strong defence throughout and worked hard to shut down the shooting circle. Despite every effort to work the ball by Liskeard, at times they just couldn’t get through this tough defence. However, the Tigers persevered and with encouragement from the team bench they kept their heads and the strong early lead ensured they stayed ahead, winning the game 34-26.

Player of the Match was again awarded to WD Laura Shepherd for her key interceptions throughout which disrupted Lastonets game.
