Starting Line-up - GK Debbie Drinkell, GD Lauren Finch, WD Sophie Thomas, C Siobhan Howe, WA Emma Thomas, GA Louise Piner, GS Vicky Ford. Res Lynn Webb
With Falcons failing to cope with the pace of the Cougar attack, the visitors started the match quickly netting 5 unreplied goals in the opening minutes of the game. GS Vicky Ford and GA Louise Piner picked up quickly from their successful partnership at last weeks game against Storm shooting at near100% giving Cougars a commanding first quarter lead of 4 – 11.
The second quarter saw Cougars extending their early lead to 19 goals with Falcons only able to put 4 in the net. GK Drinkell and GD Finch worked hard to limit the Falcon shooting opportunities with WD Sophie Thomas supporting well, using her strength to prevent a determined Falcon WA from passing the ball forward.
Centre Howe and WA Emma Thomas had their work cut out during the game with pressure from the Falcon Centre. However, energetic Howe did not disappoint using her pace to out manoeuvre her opponent and linking well with Thomas.
Lynn Webb came off the bench into GK for the second half with Drinkell moving to to WD but Falcons had also made changes and started the period with greater determination. The second half proved to be a much closer affair, with Cougars letting some silly passing errors get turned over by Falcons. Although Webb and Finch were relentless in the semi circle, Falcons’ excellent GS ensured her team got the bonus point netting all her attempts at goal.
Although not a “pretty” performance by Cougars, their hard work during the early stages of the game ensured they took maximum points with a final score of Falcons 22 Liskeard Cougars 36. Captain Debbie Drinkell awarded player of the match to Emma Thomas for her positive attacking play at WA.
